Winnacunnet Volleyball Players 2001 -2009

RE: AN OPEN LETTER

To all players past and present:

It is with great sadness that I am resigning as the Girl’s Varsity Volleyball Coach at Winnacunnet High School.  I consider it an honor to have been a small part of Warrior history and I feel tremendously fortunate to have spent time with each of you.  Being in Dodge Gymnasium each fall was, and always will be, an important part of my life.  I do not regret a single day.

If I were being completely selfish, I would remain as the coach for many years to come.  I simply love what I do and until this year, I could not imagine writing this letter.  Through what seems like a blizzard of mixed emotions; I see that the time has come when my own children need me more than my players do.  I have always considered each of you like my own, which makes this decision even more difficult.  After discussing this with my family I have concluded that I must do the right thing.  From my first day at Winnacunnet, I have always told each of you “Family First”.  I hope you will understand that I am now facing that same dilemma and lest I be branded a hypocrite; I must follow my own advice.

I will treasurer every moment of my time at Winnacunnet.  I have so many wonderful memories to hold on to and a great number of precious mementos to keep them alive.  Very simply, this has been an incredible experience.  Please accept my deepest gratitude for eight years that I consider; the time of my life.

Warmest Regards,

Coach M.

The Warrior Report

GO WHS!

Hello Warriors of 2008!
Scroll down for Match Recaps

WHS V the Rest:  The Warriors finished up their season last night with a win against Manchester Memorial.  We are now the 7th seed overall going into the tournament.  We will likely play #10 Alvirne at home on Wednesday night so come out and cheer us on.  In a very interesting regular season, we lost to 3 teams directly below us and beat the three teams directly above us in  the standings...  Congratulations on a great year so far!  I can't wait to get to practice and get ready for post season.

WHS V Exeter:  I know, I know, I missed a couple of matches but that is the life of a coach...  What an exciting and important win against the Blue Hawks of Exeter.  I was looking at the schedule and realized a real oddity... Technically speaking, every team we have played this year has been undefeated!!!!  By beating the Hawks  25-22, 25-20, 26-24 We served notice that the Warriors are for real and we are ready to take on all comers.  All matches are important but none are more exciting than playing  Exeter.  Beating them in their house is all the more sweet...

WHS V North:  I was very proud of the way we played against North.  It was a learning experience for us and we showed that we can play with the top teams.  We are learning that we need to be aggressive, not give up long runs and finish our opponents when we have the chance.

WHS V Londonderry:  Teaching the rest of Division I that Warriors are not afraid of records but more interested in being a good team was exactly what we did against Londonderry.  What began as a match that looked like were not willing to win, turned into a match of "refuse to loose".   Another undefeated bites the dust!

WHS V Pinkerton:  What a strange year: 6 teams undefeated, 6 Teams Winless, 8 teams in the middle.  No one will know anything until the season is almost over.  We played Pinkerton Friday night and, well, it wasn't a great night for the Warriors.  We lost 0-3.  The Astros were excellent defensively.  We should not be discouraged as we will use this defeat to make our team stronger.  Bring on Londonderry and the Rest of Division I!!!

WHS V BG:  Blocking was key for us tonight.  Bishop Guertin likes to run a quick and we refused to let that happen.  Our blockers effectively shut the quick offense down and we were able to control the match.  We were in system most of the night and had a good rhythm.  I was very pleased with the effort of the entire team.

Winnacunnet improves to 2-1 while Bishop Guertin falls to 1-2.  Winnacunnet travels to Defending State champion Salem (3-0) on Wednesday.

CONCORD: The Warriors traveled to Concord on Wednesday evening.  Winnacunnet needed all five sets to defeat the Crimson Tide.   The set scores were 26-24, 26-24, 16-25, 16-25, 16-14.  All three wins for the Warriors came in overtime making for a very exciting match.  Read the latest article here...

Winnacunnet (1-1) plays next at home against Bishop Guertin (2-0) on Friday. See Schedule for more info...

  • You must have a Health Form signed by your doctor

  • You must have a completed Emergency card

  • Your Student Contract must be signed by YOU and a PARENT OR GUARDIAN

ATTENTION:  THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS

Here are a few ideas that might help:

  • Bring a water bottle.  It WILL BE HOT! Hydration is a priority at tryouts.  Drink plenty of water before you start tryouts.  Drinking water after you become dehydrated is too late!

  • Never wear your volleyball shoes to and from the gym. Dirt Destroys Floors.  Most people wear sandals, flip flops, Teva’s,  etc.

  • Tryouts are mentally and physically demanding.  If you feel like you need to take a break for any reason please contact a coach in the gym immediately.

  • Bring a good attitude and your best effort!

Good Luck to all future Warriors!

Hello Warriors!

We want to remind everyone that the purpose of tryouts is to evaluate players based on (in no particular order) their enthusiasm, coachability, knowledge, athletic ability and skill level.  Earning a spot from a returning player will be difficult but not impossible.  Tryouts are designed to be a fair opportunity for all who participate.  With that said, everyone should come to tryouts prepared, fit and ready to play competitively.  In a perfect world there would be no cuts but that is not the reality of the situation in competitive sports.  While we are always thinking of ideas to lessen the impact and severity of cuts; it is impossible to accommodate everyone who tries out for a team since most often there are more players than there are spots on the roster.  To Parents:  please prepare your daughters for this possibility as best you can.  Encourage them to be their best and regret nothingTo Players: please keep this in mind; being cut from a team (any team) is not an attack on your character, personality or value as a human being.  It should not preclude you from aspiring to higher goals and a greater level of achievement in all that you do.  It should be used as a learning experience and an opportunity for growth and understanding.  With that we wish you all the very best at tryouts and hope for a successful 2008 season!

Best Regards,

Coach McDonnell
